Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
KIT incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) in 1997 as a result of a successful pilot project at a La Jolla, Calif. based community program.
What is your primary product or service?
KIT provides the training, technical assistance, child and site specific consultations necessary to empower providers of out-of-school time programs to include children with disabilities into their existing programs. KIT has a variety of products to support our services, i.e. training manual, DVD's, communication journal and eLearning.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
As the CEO, I first became interested in the full inclusion of children with disabilities while working at a Boys & Girls Club. We started including all children, regardless of abilities into our regular programming and I saw the benefits for the entire Club. The transformation was amazing for both populations. Inclusion is the right thing to do - it gives families a choice.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
KIT does not segregate as to type of disability; our training reaches across the wide spectrum of disabilities to teach providers of recreational, child care and child development programs about disabilities, enabling the process of inclusion to take place. KIT uses a relationship based model and utilizes a blended learning approach supported by live and web-based training. KIT's eLearning component is leading the way in the non-profit sector for it's content and method of delivery.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
KIT's main office and its National Training Center on Inclusion is in San Diego, California. We have one Chapter in Los Angeles and have pilot programs in Oregon, Florida, and North Carolina. Pilot sites that will be added in the summer of 2008 are in New Mexico and Washington. New National Affiliate programs are located in New York, Iowa, Missouri and Virginia.
